“Decoding Music” is designed for middle and high school students (or adults) that are interested in enhancing their knowledge of music and learning more about how to de-code the language of music. This course will enable each student to establish a strong foundation of music theory to help further his or her desire to focus on either an instrument or voice. Music education is a broad topic! It is my intent to expose, develop, and nurture each participant into becoming well versed in the language of music. It takes patience, dedication and time to develop the art of music making! This workshop is just the beginning of learning to de-code the beautiful art of music.
During the hands-on workshops, over time (Levels I,II,III), students will be introduced to the following:
• Rhythm Foundamentals- note values, time signatures, ties, anacrusis, augmentation dots
• Pitch - Scale degrees, Solfege
• Performance Data - dynamics, tempo, repeats, articulation, ornamentation • Key Signatures & Scales - Secret formula! Half and whole steps
• Sightsinging - moveable “Do”
• Major/minor keys - identification, playing, and constructing
• Intervals - identify/construct - melodic and harmonic
• Chord progressions I, IV, V7, ii,vi, vii*
• Melody - movement, range/tessitura, phrases, shape
• Form - Binary, Rondo, Strophic, Through-composed
• Harmony - basic study
• Music History - exploring beginning music to modern day
Along with learning the elements and concepts of music, students will also experience singing, moving, playing pitched and non-pitched rhythmic instruments, playing recorder, and some keyboard skills. Note: Mastery of instruments are developed with private lessons.
